Arbitrium One Vs Arbitrium Nova: Which Is the Best?

by | Oct 23, 2023 | Reviews | 0 comments

Which Arbitrum Chain is Right for You?

Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova are two Ethereum Layer 2 chains developed by Offchain Labs.

Both chains offer significant advantages over Ethereum’s mainnet, including lower transaction fees and faster transaction times.

But here’s the twist: they’re not exactly the same. In this post, we’ll break down their differences.

Whether you are an Arbitrum fan or a developer looking to build with Arbirtrum, sip a juice and let’s dive in!

TLDR

  • Layer 2s (L2) are protocols built “on top” of Ethereum to help it scale
  • Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova are two separate chains that make up the Arbitrum network but they have trade-offs
  • Arbitrum One employs Optimistic Rollup, a tried-and-true scaling solution ideal for secure, decentralized DeFi applications.
  • In contrast, Arbitrum Nova utilizes AnyTrust, a novel scaling solution, offering faster and chapter transactions, and perfect for games and NFT-based DApps

Arbitrum One Vs Arbitrum Nova

Arbitrum One

Arbitrum One

Arbitrum One went live in August 2021.

It uses Optimistic Rollup to scale transactions on the Ethereum blockchain.

Optimistic Rollup works by batching together multiple transactions off-chain and submitting them to Ethereum as a single transaction.

This allows it to process transactions much faster and more cheaply than if they were processed directly on Ethereum.

Arbitrum Nova

Arbitrum Nova

Arbitrum Nova came as an improvement on Arbitrum One in August 2022.

It shares the same code base as Arbitrum One, but it uses a different scaling solution called AnyTrust.

AnyTrust is a more scalable solution than Optimistic Rollup, which makes Arbitrum Nova faster, cheaper, and more scalable than Arbitrum One.

So, what sets them apart? I’ll delve into the differences below.

How do Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova Differ?

Arbitrum One Vs Arbitrum Nova

1. Scaling technology

The difference between the two scaling solutions is trust and how they record transactions.

Optimistic Rollups are trustless, meaning they do not require any party to be trusted; anyone can become a validator.

However, AnyTrust requires a small amount of trust in the DAC, comprising only 21 nodes.

Again, Optimistic Rollup records transactions on the Ethereum blockchain, whereas AnyTrust records transactions off-chain, except when a transaction is challenged.

2. Security and decentralization

Arbitrum One is more secure and decentralized than Arbitrum Nova.

This is because all off-chain transactions in Arbitrum One are later posted on the Ethereum blockchain, making it more transparent and resistant to attacks.

Arbitrum Nova, on the other hand, only stores transaction signatures on the Ethereum blockchain.

This makes it less secure and decentralized, but it also makes it faster and cheaper.

3. Transaction throughput and fees:

Arbitrum Nova has a higher transaction throughput and lower fees than Arbitrum One.

This is because AnyTrust is a more scalable solution than Optimistic Rollup.

Arbitrum Nova can process up to 500,000 transactions per second, while Arbitrum One can only process up to 100,000 transactions per second.

In addition, Arbitrum Nova’s fees are also much lower than Arbitrum One’s.

4. Target Audience

Arbitrum One is a general-purpose L2 designed for a wide range of applications, including decentralized finance (DeFi), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and gaming.

Arbitrum Nova is a specialized L2 designed for gaming and social applications.

These applications require higher transaction throughput than decentralization.

Which Arbitrum Chain is the Best?

It depends on what you’re looking for.

Still don’t get it? let me clarify.

Arbitrum One:

If you want the most secure and decentralized layer 2 solution, then Arbitrum One is the better choice.

It is also a good choice if you are looking for an L2 that supports many applications.

Here are some examples of projects that are using Arbitrum One:

  • Curve
  • Synthetix
  • Alchemy Pay

Arbitrum Nova:

However, if you’re looking for the fastest and cheapest layer 2 solution, then Arbitrum Nova is the better choice.

It’s also the top choice if you’re aiming to create gaming and social applications using L2.

Here are some examples of projects that are using Arbitrum Nova:

  • Babylon’s NFT marketplace
  • Fronk World
  • Layerzero Bridge
  • Legend of Eros
  • Metafab
  • Rocket Monster

Conclusion

We have reached the end of our comparison

Arbitrum One or Arbitrum Nova? It all depends on what you are looking for.
